The Q&A Archives: Mums

Question: I bought mums in 4in pots this spring set them out in beds
some are blooming now. Should I pinch the blooms and buds now and keep pinching till july first?

Answer: Since the plants are already budded and blooming, in my experience it is preferable to go ahead and enjoy the display now. When the flowers fade, trim them off and cut the plants back. Fertilize and water them to encourage them to regrow during the summer. Pinch a few times up until the middle of July to encourage them to regrow dense and bushy. With luck, they will bloom again this fall. Enjoy your mums!
