| At Country Market I purchased three Limemound Spirea, and now I have second thoughts on the selection. My situation is this. I have three plants in front of the front porch that look almost identical to the Limemound spirea. However it gets a redish hue on the flower cluster. These plants seem to want to be 5-6 feet tall and as wide. I only want something 3 foot tall at the most. Reading the leaflet with the Limemount Spirea it state the flower is rosey pink cluster. The leaflet also states that the plant will only get 3 ft tall. My wife likes the current plants for looks, I do not all that maintenance. I'm afraid that these are the same and that I will not be soving my problems. |
| There are a number of different varieties of summer blooming spirea with pink to red flowers, some larger and some smaller such as Limemound. Limemound is reliably smaller as indicated on the label. They are also considered light maintenance and easy to grow. You should shear or trim these shrubs annually, cutting back quite hard in late winter or early each spring to tidy up their outline and help maintain an even smaller size. This actually heightens the coloration on the new foliage. They can be sheared again immediately following bloom, although this would not be a hard cutting back, just a light tip trim to remove spent flowers and keep the plant from looking shaggy. Finally, these plants prefer full sun all day long and will "stretch" if grown in shade or partial shade. Also make sure you are not providing them with an oversupply of nitrogen which would encourage overly lush growth and consequently possibly increase size. I hope you enjoy your new shrubs. |
