The Q&A Archives: Ground Cover

Question: Are there any good reasons not to use Potato Vine as a ground cover? I want to use it on a shallow slope in full sun that is thirty to fourty feet long and 8 feet wide. Elaine

Answer: Solanum rantonnetii, the potato vine, has a shrub-like habit, growing 8-12' tall and 6-8' wide. It will cover the slope, but might grow too tall for the site. A better choice is Solanum seaforthianum, Brazilian Nightshade. It's an evergreen vine, growing to 15', and bearing cluserts of violet-blue, 1" wide flowers.
