The Q&A Archives: Red Barberrry Leaves Turn Green

Question: My red barberry bushes start out in spring with red leaves, but then turn quickly to green. What should I do to keep the leaves red?

Answer: In my experience, red barberries (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea) maintain their red color best in a full sun location but will fade toward green in a shadier location. Unfortunately, apart from increasing the light they receive, I do not know a way to prevent this from happening.
