I want a hydrangea that is not going to open up on me and stay compact. Any suggestions? I want to use it in a landscape.

Pia or Pink Elf is usually about two feet tall and very compact -- it is also pink as indicated by the name. The normal growth habit of hydrangeas is to open up, but you can try to minimize the look by pruning immediately after bloom each summer. Trim some of the oldest stems off at the ground to encourage vigorous new growth from the base and trim some back partially to encourage a fuller look. This helps keep the plant denser.
