We just bought a new home and would like a showy, columnar or pyramidal, deciduous tree for our yard. It will be near a lawn and should not be more than 25 feet tall. Do you have any suggestions?

Decisions, decisions. How about Sweet Gum (Liquid Amber). It's narrowly columnar in growth habit with spectacular fall color. Golden Chain (Laburnum) is a small tree with a delicate appearance and has yellow flowers in the spring. European White Birch (Betula pendula), with a strong central leader and weeping branches is a lovely tree. It likes a sunny, moist site but will adjust to dry soil. Green Ash (Fraxinus) has a pryamidal habit and is very easy to grow.

You might drive around the neighborhood to see what else you like. Usually gardeners love to share information and will give you information about what they're growing. Good luck in your new house!
