I have purchased a Crimson Queen, Japanese Maple and I am wondering what type of amendments I should use when planting this 5 gallon tree. We live in the north part of the San Fernando Valley and I would like to know if the tree can have full sun. Thank you

It isn't necessary to amend the soil - in fact, if you amend a planting hole you'll only encourage the roots to stay in a small area instead of exploring out and anchoring the tree firmly in the soil. Japanese maples need some protection from hot afternoon sunshine or the leaves will burn around the edges and look unattractive. For best results, try to find a site that receives part afternoon shade.
