Where may I order fruit bearing olive trees? This will be a Christmas present for a relative in southeast Michigan. Will it survive outdoors there? If not, this relative intends to keep in the winter in the basement or garage.

You might want to reconsider giving an olive tree as a gift to someone in Michigan. Olive trees come from tropical and temperate areas and will not thrive in such a cool climate. Even if it is protected during the winter months, the summer season won't be a long enough growing season for it to do much more than put out leaves and barely survive. It would never fruit under such circumstances, sorry to say.

Olive trees are readily available at nurseries in California and southern Arizona. Try Swan Hill Nursery, PO Box 420, Waddell, AZ 85355 (602)228-7352 or Oregon Exotics Rare Fruit Nursery, 1065 Messinger Dr., Grants Pass, OR 97527 (503) 846-7578. There's also California Tropical Fruit Tree Nursery at (800)676-6747.
