The Q&A Archives: Red Yucca Root System Is It Invasive

Question: Is the root system of the red yucca invasive. Will I start getting other red yuccas poping up in areas where I did not plant any? I have been told that some type of yuccas you can plant in your front yard all of a sudden you have one in the back yard. Please advise thank you

Answer: The yucca root system remains compact, extending as the clump expands. It shouldn't venture out too far from the plant. If new plants pop up some distance from the original, it's because seeds have been planted either by birds or by the wind. To avoid this in your yard, cut down the flowering stem as soon as the flowers fade and before seeds have a chance to develop.
