I would like to plant a showy evergreen vine on the front wall of a house. Exposure is north, so must tolerate some shade, although there are no shading obstructions. Large flowers with a long blooming season preferred. I had a bougainvilla which lived for 2 years, but did not come back 3rd year, although winter was mild. Any suggestions?

Bougainvillea is a sun lover. It probably did not get enough sunshine and that's why it didn't return. The site you describe is better suited to Stephanotis (Madagascar Jasmine), Akebia quinata (Fiveleaf Akebia), Ampelopsis (Porcelian Berry), or Parthenocissus (Virginia Creeper).
