We saw a tricolor beech up north and would like to have one in our yard. Will it grow here?

Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor', the European Tricolor Beech, produces pruple foliage with irregular pinkish-white and rose borders. It's a colorful addition to most landscapes, but is not recommended for hot, dry areas. It should grow in your gardening region if you provide some afternoon shade when the tree is young.
