The Q&A Archives: Fast Growing Shade, Zone 14

Question: I am looking for a fast growing attractive shade tree for zone 14. I am trying to landscape around our recently completed barn. I have one area where I would like shade where an evergreen would be nice. The other areas it would not matter. I have been told that most of the evergreens grow slower.
Thanks for your time,

Answer: Most evergreens are slow growers, but Picea abies (Norway Spruce) is recorded as a fast-growing tree. (Expect growth of 24" or more per year.) Deciduous trees to consider include Morus (fruitless mulberry), Sycamore, Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple), Tilia platyphyllos (Bigleaf Linden) and Gleditsia triacanthos (Thornless Honeylocust).
