I am thinking about buying a syringa vulgaris. It is listed as a deciduous. Is that true for Southern California area as well? I am inland about 12 miles from the ocean. Thanks for your help |
The common lilac is a deciduous shrub, even in mild southern California. You can grow lilacs in your gardening region, providing you choose one of the Descanso Hybrids. Lilacs need a pronounced winter chill in order to bloom well, something your region cannot provide. The Descanso Hybrids were developed especially for mild winter regions and they will bloom reliably, regardless of winter weather. Try 'Lavender Lady', 'Blue Skies', 'Chiffon', or 'White Angel'. |
