The Q&A Archives: Trimming A Weigelia

Question: I just bought a "Rumba Red" weigelia. It is about 3 ft high, but the bottom half is all twig. If I trim it back, will leaves come back on the bottom half of the shrub??
When should I trim it back?

Answer: Since this is a new plant, it is probably better to leave it alone for now and see how it leafs out next spring. This plant blooms on old wood, meaning growth from the previous year. If you trim off the tips now, you will be removing next year's flower buds. For this reason, weigela as a rule is best trimmed only right AFTER it blooms in the spring. For the first few years your shrub should not need much pruning in any case. Enjoy your weigela.
