You apparently already know that walnut trees contain a substance in their roots (juglone) that inhibits growth of some other plants. Turf grasses, ferns, and many ornamental plants are not sensitive to juglone, but some vegetables, apples, birches, azaleas, and pines are likely to suffer if they come into contact with walnut roots.
