| I have a Monrovia Felix Crousse Double Peony which I planted into my garden in early May of this year. I water regularly and the soil is always moist or damp. The last month or so, the leaves are turning brown and crinkly and very dry, starting on the outide of the leaves. I live up at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino mountains (zone 3). The weather has been very hot lately, 85-90 degrees during the day, and my garden receives full sun. I stress, however, that I water regularly, so the plant is not lacking for water. Please send me any ideas that you have. I really love the plant and don't want to see it die. Should I transplant it to the other side of my garden where it can receive shade? When I purchased the plant, the Monrovia card that came with it said "full sun". |
| Peonies are generally planted in full sun, but because of your elevation, the summer sunshine might be too intense for your peony. The crispy brown leaves are an indication it needs afternoon protection. Peonies don't like to have their roots disturbed, so it's best to transplant it in the fall, after the foliage has died down and the roots are dormant. Try to find a site with some shade from the afternoon sun, but with full morning sun. Be sure to amend the planting site with lots of organic matter so the soil will drain well, yet hold just the right amount of moisture. Best wishes with your peony! |
