| I have three different hummingbird (trumpet) vines..Have had them for several years and they have never bloomed..One has really vined up a tree beautifully but has never had a bloom...The other two are not as healthy but still are vining but have no blooms either...Can you advise me what to do to get them to bloom..As I understood they were supposed to bloom all summer... |
| Trumpet vine or Campsis radicans can take its time about beginning to bloom, usually for no apparent reason. Although some vines bloom the first year, others can take about eight years or so to start. They usually will bloom best in a full sun location, and should not be overfed as an overabundance of nitrogen can encourage excess foliage at the expense of flowers. Another reason they may not bloom is pruning at the wrong time of year. They bloom on new growth of the season, so a hard pruning in late winter to very early spring will encourage lots of vigorous new growth tips each season. Pruning in the summer will remove blooming wood. It is not strictly necessary to prune the vine each winter -- it is optional -- but it might help. Good luck with your trumpet vines! |
