Solanum rantonnetii 'Royal Robe' (Lycianthes Royal Robe) is a medium-size evergreen shrub with numerous slender arching stems. It displays masses of large, fragrant, rich blue-violet flowers with yellow centers over long season. In full sunshine, it's a fast-growing plant to 6 to 8 feet high, with equal width. If yours is trained into a single-trunk tree, prune it semi-annually to maintain the topiary form. Whether shrub or tree, follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. (Apply about one-inch of water per week, allowing the water to slowly seep down to wet the entire root mass.) Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
