Spring flowering bulbs are planted in the fall, and you can usually plant container-grown deciduous trees and shrubs with good success. Evergreens however are usually best planted in the spring. Bare-root materials are also planted in the spring when they become available. To some extent your selection will be limited by what the local nurseries have in stock on hand. They should also be able to assist you in making the right selections for your particular landscape. Take care with new plantings that the soil is kept evenly moist up until the ground freezes for the season. This will help the plants root better and withstand the cold weather better.
