| I have several plants that popped up in my garden this year, and I don't know what it is. I believe they hav self-seeded from the neighbor's garden next door, and she doesn't know what it is either. They are in bloom right now. The plants are about 18 inches tall. The center stem is a thick, reddish stalk, and there are several branches off the main stem, forming an umbrella shape. The branches are easy to break off from the main stem - it seems succulent. The flowers are either coral or pink, and bloom up the stems. They are not hollyhocks, and I have searched various library books and internet databases to find out what these are! Any help?? |
| Going by your decription and the late summer timing, I would make a guess it is Impatiens balsamina, an old fashioned annual, also sometimes called Garden Balsam. If this is the plant, it will eventually form seed pods that sort of explode when touched. There is a photo of some young plants here http://www.msue.msu.edu/msue/i...
