| Last year I planted a peach tree. At the beginning of the season I put some Lindane around the base of the tree. I am starting to see an opening forming between the base and where it starts to branch out. Do I need to reapply some more Lindane or do I need to do something else? |
| The fissure you describe is common in peach and apricot trees. The bark on these trees will often split and a gummy substance may ooze out, beginning in spring and continuing through summer. This condition is generally caused by a bacteria (Pseudomonas). Lindane is an insecticide and will not control the problem with your peach tree so I wouldn't recommend reapplying it. If the split in your tree trunk is small, you may be able to cut away the diseased tissue with a sharp knife and stop the infection. There are few other controls available, but you may want to check with your local Cooperative Extension office to see what options they can offer. (208-377-2107) Good luck with your tree! |
