| I have a Meyer lemon which has had fruit for months but they do not ripen. What is the growing season(how long) before I can expect a lemon? |
| Meyer lemons can be harvested when they change from green to yellow with a greenish tinge. The lemons can remain on the tree for months without sacrificing flavor. Citrus trees begin to produce fruit two to three years after planting. Since the fruit does not ripen in storage, harvesting should begin only when the fruit is fully mature and palatable. Meyer lemon produces very heavy crops of fruit at an early age. Although a high percentage of the crop is harvested in early summer, some fruit can be obtained all the year round. Because of this, predicting when your tree will bear fruit is somewhat difficult. The Meyer is not a true lemon, but a natural hybrid between the true lemon and sweet orange. The fruit has a very high juice content, but has a much milder lemon flavor than the true lemons. |
