Any view on how Ellegantissima Arborvitae or Spartan Juniper fair as deer resistant evergreens. In my area Emerald Green arborvitae are devoured by deer. I have some hemlocks that do jsut fine. ( was told that if deer are hungry enough they will go for the hemlocks, but they are not near the top of the food list.) Will the Ellegantissima and/or Spartan be in the same category as the hemlock? |
In my experience, arborvitae in general are a deer favorite. They have also eaten junipers at my house. If they are hungry nearly any plant is at risk once they realize it is edible -- and they will test more and more new plants the harsher the season and the hungrier they become. If your property is on their regular habitual browse route, then unfortunately your best defense in the long run is a fence. If the pressure is not so severe, you may have success with the spray repellents applied and reapplied per label instructions. You might also check with your neighbors and see what they are still having success with in terms of the local menu. I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging. |
