| Largest of the citrus family, the pummelo, native to Malaysia, is believed to be an ancestor of the grapefruit. They are a giant citrus fruit that can reach 10-11 inches in diameter, with a firm flesh and less juice than a grapefruit. The following varieties are available from Laguna Hills Nursery, 25290 Jeronimo Road, Lake Forest,CA 92630 (949~830-5653): Chandler Giant (up to 9 inches) fruit, seedless. Deep pink flesh is mildly sweet and firm. Very thick peel. Harvest winter-spring. Standard grows 18 feet, dwarf grows 12 feet. Best quality in inland areas, but reaches acceptable quality close to the coast. Reinking Huge (up to 12 inches) fruit, seedy. White flesh is mildly sweet and firm. Very thick peel. Harvest winter-spring. Standard grows 20 feet, dwarf grows 15 feet. Best quality in inland areas, but reaches acceptable quality close to the coast. Sarawak (Tahitian) Vary large rounded fruit. The green flesh has a unique, spicy, sweet lime flavor. |
