I bought a mum, it has cushion like bloom that are yellowy-orange and darker in the center. It is a large plant in a pot. What do I do with it...plant it now (the temperature is highs in the 50's and lows in the 30's)or wait until spring? |
In my experience it is almost always better to plant late than to try to keep it over the winter in a container. Ideally, mums are best planted in the spring so they have a long time to become established before winter. At this point, plant it in a full sun location that is well drained, meaning never soggy, and mulch it well. Place the mulch around the perimeter, not over top of the plant. When the blooms are faded, trim the plant back to about four inches tall. In spring, trim away the rest of the old stems and look for new growth around the edge of the plant. Good luck with your mum! |
