The leaves on my lilac tree are covered with a white substance. What is it and how can I get rid of it?

Sounds like powdery mildew, a fungal disease. It's common on lilacs toward the end of summer and into the fall months because environmental conditions (warm days, cool nights) are right. Since your lilac will lose its leaves soon, there's nothing you need to do to control the disease, other than to rake and remove the fallen leaves from your garden.
