The Q&A Archives: Pruning Butterfly Bush

Question: I planted a butterfly bush in November. For the winter should I cut it back? Is this necessary in the climate we live in? Is it to late to cut it back if necessary?

Answer: Butterfly Bush, also known as Buddleia Davidii, blooms on new growth. Therefore, stems should be pruned back to 1-2 ft. in early spring to encourage large, lush flower spikes. In my area, Zone 6, I always prune back my Butterfly Bush on St. Patrick's Day.
