| I currently have two varigated Hydrangeas that have not produced flowers for about three years. The plants appear healthy getting about 3 to 4 feet wide and 2 feet tall. I currently use soil acidifier and prune the plants in the spring being carefull not to cut to low and remove new buds. Ready to get flowering!! |
| Bigleafed hydrangeas flower on wood formed the previous year, so I suspect your spring pruning ritual has pruned off the flowering wood. If you feel you need to prune, do it right after flowering time only. This way you will not risk removing flower buds. Of course, if there is extensive winter damage to the plant then this would also damage the flowering wood. If you are seeing a lot of winterkill, you could try protecting them from wind with a burlap screen for instance and see if that helps. Finally, be very patient before removing any stems, sometimes it takes them a while to leaf out in the spring. Good luck with your hydrangeas! |
