Our backyard neighbor has a balcony looking over into our yard. We would like to plant trees across the back... we want perennial fast growers to 40' that will provide privacy without much leaf dropping. The length of the fence is 54'. We were looking at the Japanese Silver Tree in the local nursery, but it doesn't look full enough. What tree would be a better fit for our needs?

Sounds as though you're looking for a broadleaf evergreen tree. While these trees hold their leaves year around, the older foliage eventually drops to make way for new leaves. Therefore, you can expect some leaf drop (but not all the leaves all at once!). Some suggestions for your gardening region include Acacia baileyana, Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree), Eriobotrya japonica (loquat), Lagunaria (primrose tree), Olneya tesota (desert ironwood) or Umbellularia californica (California laurel).
