| My vegetable garden soil test out perfectly for PH, nit.hydr.and phosphate as well as all minerals but I cannot grow any root crops, such as radishes,beets, onions, carrots,etc. The tops do just fine but the roots are small and elongated. Any help you can give will be appreciated. |
| Interestingly enough, the plants you mentioned all need to be planted in very early spring because they grow best under cooler temperatures. They will also size up better in relatively rich soil with a steady moisture level (evenly moist but well drained so it is never soggy), and will do best in soil that is a good loam or even slightly sandy. If your soil is heavy you might want to consider using raised beds to which you can add ample organic matter and possibly a bit of sand to lighten the soil. Finally, you might want to check with your local extension for suggestions as to specific varieties that seem to do best in your local area. I hope this helps you trouble shoot. |
