Living in San Diego my tropicana has grown like crazy. I love it and it loves to grow. I wonder is it ok to trim off the lower leaves that are heavy and covering other plants. How much can it be trimmed, how often? Will it continue to grow up or out? |
You can safely trim the older leaves off the plant - new leaves and new flower stalks will be produced from the center of the plant. In your mild winter climate your canna will continue to grow and produce flowers all year around. Trim as often as necessary to remove old foliage and spent flowers. Doing so will keep your canna tidy looking. Expect your Tropicana to reach 4'-6' in height. Since the plants grow from rhizomes (thickened roots), the rhizomes will eventually form clumps which should be divided when they become overcrowded (usually every 3-4 years). When flowering slows and foliage appears crowded, it's usually time to dig and divide a clump of cannas. |
