Which side do you plant up, when planting bulbs? Flat side down?

Bulbs such as tulips and daffodils and hyacinths with a round flat end and a pointy tip go pointy end up. Any time you can see roots on one end, that end goes down. Sometimes you can see the beginning of sprouting tips and the sprouting side would go up. Some bulbs are really tough to tell about, plant them and hope for the best.
