Butterfly bush should be pruned after flowering by removing some of the oldest stems to within a few inches of ground level, and cutting back the rest of the stems by about two-thirds. Buddleja blooms on new wood so the more new stems you can encourage, the more blooms you'll have. In some gardening regions the entire top of the plant freezes down to ground level, which renews the shrub and helps it produce lots of new flowering growth. Enjoy!
