Can I plant my October Glory maple in an open area among fir trees? Ground cover is waist high Salal, ferns and huckel berries. I live on a ridge 300ft above the Skokomish Valley north of Shelton facing the Olympic Mts.
Thank You

Maple trees enjoy the companionship of understory and neighboring trees. The site you describe should be fine. To get your new maple off to a healthy start, clear the understory for a few feet around the trunk and be sure to water your new maple regularly while it's becoming established. If you plant now, you'll need to water all season until the fall rains take over. Enjoy your new maple!
