The Q&A Archives: Sweetbay Magnolia

Question: Will a Sweetbay Magnolia tolerate periodically boggy soil, i.e., a site that is not very well drained? Will it also tolerate periodic drought?

Answer: This tree (Magnolia virginiana0 is sometimes called swamp magnolia and it is found in nature in moist to wet sites such as along streambanks, so it will tolerate a moist location. It will also tolerate some shade. Once established it will grow in soil with average moisture, but it resents drought. It would do best in a spot with an acid, evenly moist to wet soil with a high organic matter content.
