Does planting annual flowers in the raised beds I plan to use for planting vegetables the following year have any negative effects on the soil? |
Annual flowers shouldn't deplete the soil of any particular nutrients, and as long as you didn't use any pesticides on the annuals, I think you're safe in using the raised bed for veggies. One of the main reasons we recommend you rotate your vegetable crops is to help you keep one step ahead of insect and disease problems. If you consistently use one patch of ground for a single crop, insects or disease pathogens can over-winter and attack your plants early the next year. With this in mind, be sure to rotate where you plant your vegetables. In my own garden I often plant veggies in with annual flowers. I'm just careful not to use pesticides on the flowers so that I won't accidentally spray my edibles. Hope you have a wonderful harvest! |
