The Q&A Archives: Shade Garden Suggestions

Question: I have a north facing front yard and would like some suggestions on what plants would grow and thrive best in a shaded garden. Thank you.

Answer: There are literally dozens of plants to choose from! Shrubs that thrive in shade include Daphne odora (winter daphne), Enkianthus (with delightful urn-shaped flowers), Fatsia japonica, hardy fuchsia, Gardenia, Hydrangea, Clethra (summersweet), and Camellia. Perennial choices include Anemone (windflower), Columbine, Asarum (wild ginger), Astilbe, Begonia, Caladium, Campanula (bellflower), Coleus, Cyclamen, Ferns, Gentian, Impatiens, Hellebore, Heuchera (coral bells), Senecia, Rehmannia (Chinese foxglove), and Tiarella (foamflower). Hosta, Lamium and lilies are sure-fire plants for shady gardens, too. Enjoy your new landscape!
