The Q&A Archives: Plants For Lakeside Buffer Zone

Question: What plants would grow well in a lakeside buffer zone with quite a bit of shade and fairly wet soil?

Answer: Fairly wet soil could mean that it puddles often, or that it's boggy. If so, Iris, Rush, or Acorus (Japanese Sweet Flag) are suitable. If the soil is damp but not soggy wet, try Osmunda (royal fern), Rheum (ornamental rhubarb), Woodwardia fimbriata (giant chain fern), Aconitum, Ascleias incarnata (swamp milkweed), Hosta, Houttuynia, Phalaris (ribbon grass), or Zantedeschia (calla).
