I have a narrow north facing yard 14' and am going to plant Ilex for a border hedge part way back from the front 30' and a small 4' hight fence the rest of the way 40'. I am doing flatstone and plantings, but would like to have a few trees on the fence side that grow to about 10', are light and airy like a japanese maple but something different as I already have two in the front yard. Any ideas?

Erythrina falcata, the coral tree, might suit the site. It has an open branching habit and airy canopy. Cotinus coggygria, also called smoke bush, has an airy look, as well. My absolute favorite is Albizia (silk tree) with feathery foliage and puff-ball looking flowers. It gets a bit taller than your requirements, but would be a nice complement to your other plants.

Hope one of these suggestions appeals to you!
