The Q&A Archives: What Flowers Or Plants Are More Suitable?

Question: Hi there,
I have a high wall which I want to plant some hanging plants on. My issue is I would like to plant something in the backgrtound a little taller. Any ferns, flowers, or maybe high groundcover? I only have shallow beds to work with.W hat could I use in that sunny/shade area that would not need much soil? Thanking you for your help.

Answer: Plants that will do well in shallow soils include Erica (heather), Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax), Ajuga (carpet bugle), Hypericum (St. John's Wort), Lily Turf (Lirope), Lavender, Phlox subulata (moss-pink), Arenaria (sandwort), and Armeria (thrift). Any of these selections will produce seasonal bloom and all are fairly easy to grow. Good luck with your project!
