| I'm curious about the fruit on the Akebia. If we only plant one plant, will it not cross pollinate, and thus we can expect no fruit? If not, how prolific is the fruit, how large, how messy? Please give us a bit more information on this vine, we want to use it over a dog kennel, for shade on an arbor. . . thanks! |
| Akebia is self-fertile so if the flowers are pollinated by insects, you can expect some fruit. If fruit forms, it will be thick, purplish, 2"-4" long, sausage-looking, and edible. Fruit production is sporadic. Akebia grows equally well in sun or shade, will sprawl or climb, and can become rampant once established. You can keep the plant under control by pruning back hard in the winter. |
