The Q&A Archives: What Does Damage To Hostas?

Question: What causes small holes on hostas?

Answer: Hosta leaves are favorite snacks of snails and slugs. Hostas grow best in cool, shady gardens, in rich, moist soil - which is also the perfect environment for slugs and snails. If you examine the damaged leaves closely you'll probably find slime trails. If so, slugs or snails are culprits. Try sprinkling diatomaceous earth around the damaged plants to discourage the slimey pests. Best wishes with your hostas!
