I have heard that cutting sunflowers will make them more abundant in a small garden of them that I plant each year but have never tried it.

How and when should I do this, if at all? Will the flower grow back soon after I do this? When is the correct time to plant sunflowers?

There are several different types of sunflowers; the tall ones will produce only a single stalk with a single flower; the newer hybrids produce multiple stems with a flower atop each stem. If you want an abundance of sunflowers in your garden, plant several of the newer hybrids with branching stems (such as 'Sunburst Mix' or 'Dwarf Yellow Spray') rather than trying to cut the stalk of a single-stemmed type of sunflower. Sunflower seeds germinate best when soil temperatures are above 50F. Wait about 3 weeks after the last frost of the season to plant your seeds and you should have lots of sunflowers blooming in your garden by mid-summer. Best wishes with your garden!
