The Q&A Archives: What To Plant In Front Of Podocarpus Gracilior

Question: I need suggestions for planting in front of a hedge of podocarpus. The area is approx 8' x 30'. I think I would like to mix some low type shrubs with a groundcover. The area is in full sun. The soil is very sandy.

Answer: The fern-like needles of your podocarpus would make a wonderful background for Hidcote lavender, phlox, bee balm, globe thistle and delphiniums. This combination will provide gentle height graduation, a profusion of blooms, and contrasts in foliage to add interest to the area. Dwarf boxwoods and/or heather are good choices for evergreen shrubs, and basket-of-gold, creeping juniper or creeping thyme make excellent groundcovers in full sunshine. Hope these suggestions appeal to you!
