I have a 3ft space from my fence to my mow strip and I want to plant a couple trees for privacy and shade; next to the trees is a pool. Can you advise what type of trees would be good for the area? I am worried about roots being aggresive enough to lift the concrete. I also don't want a tree that has fruit that is messy because my children would only track it in the house. Thanks a bunch for your help!!!

The area you describe probably won't provide enough room for healthy tree root growth, but you can plant some treelike shrubs in the area. Here are a few suggestions for polite, medium sized treelike plants:
Dracaena, Ensete (banana), tree ferns, small palms such as Sabal minor, Schefflera, Camellia, Fatsia japonica, and Viburnum. Both camellia and viburnum flower, but the petals tend to drop straight down when the flowers are spent and generally won't blow around in gentle winds.

Hope these plants appeal to you!
