I am thinking of planting a Madrone at my home in the Penn Valley area (Grass Valley Ca. 95959). This tree will be approximently 6 feet from a pond or water feature. Would you recomend this tree for this location? |
Arbutus 'Marina' isn't highly rated for your gardening region. It may perform well for you, but it may also be a big disappointment. Madrone prefers more summertime humidity than your hot summer region can supply, and may be damaged by cold winter weather. Arbutus menziesi, the species madrone, will grow well in your region. It's a larger tree, but has the same peeling reddish brown bark, clusters of pinkish flowers, and brilliant orange-red, rough-coated berries. Hope this will make an acceptable substitute. Best wishes with your landscape! |
