Black bamboo is a running rather than a clumping type bamboo and the roots should be contained, even when planted in a garden bed. You can plant black bamboo in a large container with great success. Be sure the container has adequate drainage holes and use a mixture of garden soil and commercial potting soil to give the container some weight, to keep the plant from toppling over in the wind.

Bamboo is basically a large grass so water as often as needed and feed in the spring with a high nitrogen fertilizer for best performance.
