| Cranberry viburnums are showy plants with a dense, compact growth habit. These shrubs rarely need pruning, but when they do, timing is everything! Cranberry viburnums flower in spring, produce bright red berries which persist for months, and the foliage puts on a colorful show in the fall. You'll want your pruning to interrupt this performance as little as possible. With your viburnum, you can prune in late winter/early spring before new growth develops. Since flowers form on new shoots, pruning in late spring should not affect the flowering of your shrub, or its production of berry clusters. As a general rule, you can safely remove one-third of the live growth on a tree or shrub without compromising its health. |
