Clematis should be planted in an area where they receive full sunshine. They like their tops in the sun and their roots kept cool. You can shield their roots by planting a small shrub in front of the vine to shade the roots, or by placing a large decorative stone in front, or by planting a low growing groundcover in the soil around the roots of your clematis.

Clematis prefers rich, loose, fast-draining soil so be sure to amend the planting bed before installing your new clematis.
