I just moved into a new home and would like to plant and grow some fruit trees in the future. What would be the best fruit trees for the Willamette Valley, OR area and also good for a beginner to start with. When is a good time to plant them? |
You can plant an edible landscape and really enjoy your new yard. The Willamette Valley is berry country! Try planting raspberries and blueberries and strawberries. Disease resistant apple trees like Akane, Spartan, Liberty and Mutsu are good for beginners. Bosc and Bennet pear trees will do well in your area (and will pollinate each other); Lapins is a self-fruitful cherry tree, or try Lambert and Rainier cherries. Fruit trees will be available at garden centers in the very early spring. You'll havea 3 - 4 year wait for fruit, so buy your new trees as soon as they become available. |
